Remembering Joe

Ten years ago today we lost Joe. His passing epitomized the saying that "Life is not fair". He was my very good friend, but much more than that to his wife and 2 sons. So many people were cheated out of the love, companionship, and fun he brought to their lives. But again, let it be said that "Life is not fair".

At dusk this evening we visit Joe's Spot. Its the place Eileen buried his ashes on their land, walking distance for the folks who will be there remembering Joe. He gets lots of visits though. Throughout the year, several times a week we pass Joe's Spot while on dog walks. And there's a little stone bench and a bird bath that attract the forest's critters when people aren't around.

After a time we will trundle over to Eileen's place, then lift a glass or two to his memory and share both laughs and tears. Eileen has asked me to bring over some "old" music that Joe would like. One of the CDs I plan on bringing this evening is the just released (posthumously) John Stewart, The Piano Album.

John died this past January (coincidentally on the 19th of the month as well). He recorded this album in 1976, so it qualifies as "old" music. Stewart discarded his guitar just this once in favor of a piano. The album was never released until this week. Joe was a self taught piano player who could plop down at the piano bench and apply his nimble paws to the "88s" pleasing and amazing of anyone within earshot. Joe enjoyed Stewart and would like this CD. The last song is a very personal version of Auld Lang Syne which couldn't be more appropriate. I also burned another disc of music that hopefully reflects the life, times, and spirit of Joe and all those he has touched.

Thank you, Tom. I read and listened again after everyone left tonight. Thank you for Willie and He Was a Friend of Mine. Know this, you were a friend indeed, and Joe knew it. And you have been a true friend to me these 10 years.
