God's Speed Dan

This message was posted to Dan Fogelberg's website yesterday morning...

Sunday, December 16

Dear friends,

Dan left us this morning at 6:00am. He fought a brave battle with cancer and died peacefully at home in Maine with his wife Jean at his side. His strength, dignity, and grace in the face of the daunting challenges of this disease were an inspiration to all who knew him.

Dan Fogelberg was an incredibly gifted singer/songwriter. I discovered him early on, as he was an "Illinois guy" like me. His lyrics are sharp like ice, while his voice is smooth as a meandering river. Dan's many albums occupy a shelf in the music corner. I suspect I will revisit them soon and often. On this sad day I recall a verse from his song "Illinois"

Flat on the prairies, soil and stone
Stretching forever taking me home
'Cause I've got a woman who waits for me there
And I need a breath of that sweet country air
(Chorus)
Illinois, Illinois
Illinois, I'm your boy

Rest in peace song man...
