It is certainly odd (but not surprising) when an apparent innocent search on the internet un-earths a folk music artifact. While the Folk Project © continues its all too pleasant freefall back into time and place, I maintain hope that someday we fast forward to the early/mid ‘60’s. Until that time I will continue to recover some significant lost treasures from the era I frankly have a little expertise in.
Today my self inflicted folk strands helped me locate the missing first Phillips label album by Jim & Jean. The two other Verve albums are already in my collection. If you missed Jim & Jean I’m not surprised, but they were IMHO a watershed group who began the folk-rock transformation about 1965 (Jim Glover was a former college roommate of Phil Ochs). Their album “Changes” included several songs penned by Phil, including Crucifixion. Jim & Jean’s version of Lay Down Your Weary Tune Lay Down is one of my all-time favorites…EVER.
So what’s Jim doing today I ask myself? Well upon a little investigating I find out he is still playing six string banjo, guitar, and twelve string in the Sarasota area and has a new CD which contains a song called “Let’s Send Bush Back to Texas”.
Jim writes on his bio on the CD Baby website:
“I have been hooked on political and protest music all my Life...which makes me 62.After teaching my roommate at Ohio State, Phil Ochs, the basics of folk guitar (not that hard), we began doing hoots and playing coffee houses around Columbus, first as the "Singing Socialists" which was fun and later as The "Sundowners" which was not.If you ever heard of Jim and Jean, That was myself and Jean Ray when we were married and made 3 albums two of which, "Changes" and "People World" have just been re-issued on the "Collectors Choice" Label. So why does an Old Folkie like me put out another record?Playing music is what I like to do and with these critical and dangerous times we live in I want to keep singing to those who still have that dream of a better world and the long tradition of folk music as the most loyal voice to that is what keeps me going”.Peace, Jim Glover
So, Peace to you too Jim, it seems like only yesterday…
