Word has just arrived that Travis (of Bud & Travis fame) has passed away. He was a pioneer in the genre of folk music and a fine gentleman. I had the opportunity to meet him back in 2003 at Kingston Trio Fantasy Camp. John Stewart considered Travis a hero and a mentor. Travis, then already in his 70's could still get up and sing delighting the assemblage on more than one occasion. Much has been written about his storied career. Friend Henriksen is 6 or 8 chapters into writing a biography of sorts, having interviewed Travis both in person and over the phone for "Wednesday night conversations".
Bud and Travis introduced the Latin sound to folk music. They even had an album done totally in Spanish. They recorded La Bamba before Richie Valens made it a rock and roll hit single. In true Mexican music tradition they played gut (nylon) string guitars, often with resounding flamenco licks. I have a couple CDs of their's I'll listen to soon. Adios Amigo, thank you for the music...
